Beachcombing Australia - Cleaning Up Australia's Beaches One Short Walk At A Time

Updated on October 6, 2013

I Love The Beach, I Wish Everyone Did

I have started the Beachcombing Australia initiative. Just go to the beach for a short walk, take a rubbish bag and pick some up to throw away.

Why? Because I went to take my son for a short walk along the beach, something I hadn't done since he was born. I was absolutely horrified by the amount of rubbish. It just goes to show people just don't care anymore.

When I think about that huge pile of rubbish floating in the middle of the ocean twice the size of the United States it makes me ill that we could do such a thing to our beautiful planet. Now I know I'm just one person, and that what I'm doing isn't much; but if I can just inspire one or two other people to do the same maybe, just maybe, we can make a difference.

It's True - We Didn't Start Our First Walk Picking Up Rubbish

We weren't even thinking about rubbish. We were thinking about treasure. My two year old son loves looking for treasure, as do I. One of his favorite TV shows is 'Jake and The Neverland Pirates' who are always on the lookout for gold dubloons. So when I said to him let's take a walk at the beach he said 'YAY - Treasure!' to which I smiled and nodded.

My main idea was walking on sand is good for my thighs and will wear him out enough for nap time. Simple huh? But when we got there I kept saying 'don't pick that up - it's rubbish not treasure!'. It was terrible.

Half way through our walk I noticed some plastic bags tied to a fence - obviously there to encourage dog owners to pick up their dogs mess. But an idea struck me and I just had to run with it. I waited until we got to our turnaround point, which was when we found my son's 'treasure' - a seahorse mould. Then I started picking up rubbish all the way back.

Now we go once a week when it isn't raining. For fifteen minutes we walk looking for treasure, then the fifteen minutes back we pick up rubbish with the bags I take. Even my hubby has joined in now and is even thinking of getting a metal detector - which is funny as I have been asking for one for years!

My hope is people will read this and think:

What a great idea!

Fifteen minutes each way isn't far, will do me good and I'll be doing something great for the environment too.

After all, with all the good karma from picking up rubbish surely some of us will find treasure too!
